What is luster you ask?? Luster is a liquified precious metal used as an overglaze on top of already glaze fired ceramics. Once applied and completed, the pieces are fired a third time at a relatively low temperature. Luster is generally used in small amounts as a decorative accent to compliment the form of an object rather than covering an entire shape. At this workshop, we will have gold as well as mother-of-pearl luster. Mother-of-pearl is a translucent luster overglaze that provides iridescence to the glazed surface. All lusters respond to the glaze/s on which they are applied. For example, in order for the luster to have a shiny sheen to them (which is ideal), the luster would need to be applied on top of a shiny glaze. Be sure to keep this in mind when choosing which pieces to bring to this workshop with you!

What you'll need to bring:

  • 3 pieces no larger than 5x5 inches,
  • respirator (for those who don't have one we will provide disposable ones),
  • a positive mental attitude!

Upon request and for an additional fee, we are happy to accommodate objects that do not fit within the size and quantity specifications; please contact us via email prior to purchasing!
